Choosing the right home improvement contractor could be the difference between bringing your home vision to life and, well, ending up with something that’s just not quite right. Or worse, you could end up with a new structure that’s not safe, steady or durable. It’s important to choose a contractor who understands your design concept and can deliver exceptional service. But how can you go about finding a contractor you can trust?
Take a look at our tips for things to look for in a home improvement company to make sure you’re getting the right professionals for the job.
It’s always reassuring to work with a company who has experienced senior staff members working in the field. Senior staff members have the know-how to deal with installation projectsin a quick and effective manner and can mentor less experienced staff to make sure the job gets done right. If they’ve been working in the area for a long time, they are also likely to be aware of particular issues with the location’s weather, terrain, development application processes and any other location specific-issues that might arise.
Tip: Be careful not to fall for the “we have 20 years of combined experience” gag. Companies that boast information like this could easily have fifteen or twenty plus staff members, leaving them with very little individual experience. Make sure the individual staff members are experienced and the company itself is long-standing.
One of, if not THE most important thing to keep an eye out for is whether the home improvements company is a registered member of the Master Builders Association in their respective state. This association recognises construction industry professionals as experts in their field and is a respected title in the trades. Most home improvements companies who are member of the Master Builders Association will have the logo displayed on their website.
The best home improvements companies have workshops where they can design and manufacture custom orders to make sure you get exactly what you want. If the company doesn’t have their own workshop and instead sources materials from external suppliers, you could risk running into problems if any piece of the design puzzle doesn’t fit quite right. Sending supplies back to suppliers for alterations can be costly and time consuming – so make sure your home improvements company is equipped to design, manufacture and alter material in-house.
Check the company’s website to see previous projects. Look for photographs and case studies that show the company’s workmanship, not just a list of projects.
