Things to Consider When Choosing a Patio or Pergola

Home / Blog / Things to Consider When Choosing a Patio or Pergola

Installing a patio or pergola lets you extend your living area into the outdoors. That means enjoying the wilderness without suffering the full brunt of the harsh Adelaide sun in the summer and without enduring chilly drafts on winter nights—Aldinga Home Improvements has patio and pergola designs perfect for each extreme—and for the whole year round.

If you’re having trouble choosing the right patio or pergola design for your outdoor area, look at some of our design tips below. We also invite you to come and take a look at our designs in person at our Aldinga Beach store or two Adelaide display sites.

Patio and Pergola Roof Design

Flat Roof Design

Flat-roof pergola designs are very on-trend as they mimic a mid-century modern look that’s making a widespread comeback. They also combine minimalist, contemporary architecture to complement modern Adelaide homes.

Pitched Roof Design

Pitched roof patios and pergolas can have a traditional “pitched tent” shape (one of our most popular designs) or a round colonial shape. Both add a sense of historic charm.

Curved or Arched Roof Design

A curved or arched patio roof design is a beautiful accompaniment to traditional country-style homes. While curved or arched patio and pergola roofs are less common than pitched and flat roof designs, they can look great when placed in the right area – such as along a fence or in a small outdoor area, where the height of the roof gives a sense of openness.

Insulation

Insulating your patio or pergola is the most efficient way to keep it cool in summer and warm in winter. No one wants to sit at the lunch table sweltering under a tin roof, and by the same token, it’s not pleasant to feel the winter chill drift in while you’re trying to enjoy a quiet drink on the patio. Moments like these can clear your guests out and leave the deck deserted when it should be used most.

To ensure you get the best use of your home or business’ outdoor area, we highly recommend patio roof insulation and installing outdoor blinds to keep the sun and chill out.

Colour and Materials

The colours and materials you choose for your project are a matter of personal choice. However, some colours are better at conducting or repelling heat than others, and the same goes for materials. If you’d like to discuss your requirements, we’ll suggest suitable colours and materials for your project.

For more information about our patios and pergolas, visit Aldinga Home Improvements’ Aldinga Beach workshop or one of our Adelaide display sites. We have various colours and designs available, including pitched, curved, and flat roof designs. We can also insulate your patio and add outdoor blinds for warmth and sun protection.
